Discovering PLACE Environmental Food Justice Landscape Project is master's project of students from the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and the Environment and their client, the University of Michigan-Flint Outreach department and those partnered with Discovering PLACE.
The project will take place for the Winter 2012 school semester and following 2012-2013 school year. Completion is expected by early spring 2013.
The project will focus on designing and implementing an urban garden at Beecher 9th Grade Academy/ Beecher High School, a Flint public schooll and the creation of a place-based curriculum that utilizes the multidisciplinary aspects of urban agriculture to support concepts of education for sustainability. The curriculum with be targeted towards students of the ninth grade level attending Beecher.
The project is designed to engage the school community in an ongoing dialogue about food and environmental justice that will support students’ academic and social skill development. Discovering PLACE and Beecher Academy are in need of assistance in researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating a place-based environmental curriculum series for high school students, planning and constructing an outdoor classroom and greenhouse on the school grounds, and organizing a series of teacher workshops about place- and inquiry-based learning.
